Overview
In this class we will examine a procedural method of direct long pose portrait painting, beginning with the gesture and finishing with glazing. We will begin our portraits by employing abstract geometry to establish a well proportioned gesture, which we will then block-in, and utilize to develop our mass oriented drawing stage in monochrome. Next, on a separate untoned canvas, we will do color studies in preparation for the second stage, full color underpainting. When our color studies are completed, we will use the insights they provided to develop an effective color relationship, in high key and chroma, in the underpainting stage of our portraits.
Then we will introduce medium and move into the overpainting, or finishing stage, of our paintings, working section by section, before concluding with final adjustments and fine tuning over the whole.

Materials
Filbert bristle brushes #2 and #3
Small soft synthetic/sable brushes (flats and/or rounds)
A knockdown brush (larger and sifter than the rest, a “Blender”)
2 cotton canvases (16×12 or 20×16) toned with Golden Acrylic Neutral #6
1 untoned cotton canvases (16×12) for a separate color study
Stand oil
A prepared wooden palette
Sealable turp jars or cups
Viva paper towels
Palette knives are optional
Instructor’s Palette (not required, but meant to provide an example of a full, or extended, color palette)
