Overview
This master class provides a structured, step-by-step approach to figure painting in oil. Participants will learn how to use abstract geometry to sketch the figure, block in mass, explore colour, and apply finishing effects. Through a series of sessions, we will progress from initial sketches to a finished painting, focusing on technique and understanding the medium. This course can be a paint along or used a demo course and is highly educational.
Suitable for intermediate painters and anyone wanting to up their game! Beginners are welcome and encouraged.
Course Breakdown:
- Sketching the Figure:
- Using soft vine charcoal, we will freehand sketch the placement, gesture, and proportion of the figure on a canvas with an imprimatura ground.
- Abstract geometry will be employed to guide the initial sketching process.
- Blocking in Mass:
- We will advance into mass by blocking in shadow shapes and wiping out light shapes to create a graphic map of shapes on the canvas.
- Oil paint mixed with solvent will be used to secure the charcoal sketch and establish a foundation for the painting.
- Monochromatic Under painting:
- Using a mixture of titanium white and raw umber, we will block in the light mass, focusing on developing value ranges while maintaining a high key and low contrast.
- This session will complete the mass-based drawing portion of the process.
- Exploring Colour:
- A separate session will be dedicated to creating a colour study on a separate canvas.
- We will then layer colour over the monochromatic under painting in subsequent sessions, gradually building up colour relationships and an extended range.
- Refinement and Finishing Effects:
- We will introduce medium and work with subtle finishing effects such as glazes and velaturas to fine-tune the image and make adjustments.
- This session will focus on refining the painting and bringing it to completion.
- Post-Production Procedures:
- The final session will cover post-production procedures such as varnishing, storing, and framing the completed painting.
