Overview
In this class we will study a systematic and priority driven procedure for painting the portrait in oil paint. We will explore the gesture, proportion, and planes of the neck, head, and face, within the overall orientation and perspective of the portrait. We will examine orientation as it relates to tip, turn, and tilt, and we will give consideration to structure and overlap in the pursuit of powerful and accurate portraiture in oil paint. We will employ a limited palette which will allow us to focus our energy and attention on these priorities. We will begin with open grisaille portraiture, practicing the achievement of gesture, proportion, and perspective with the greatest economy of means. We will then close the grisaille and practice the distribution of value shapes as determined by planar orientation to the light source and structure. We will then look at the addition of medium within the painting process and practice modeling and render with softer brushes as we advance toward the conclusion of the painting.
